Short Courses at Crown

Short courses are a great way for you to experience new subjects, gain new skills that are valued by employers and meet new people. At Crown, we have many different short courses in Hospitality (such as barista, bartending, restaurant service) and Travel & Tourism (such as flight attending and cruise ships).


Barista (coffee making)

  • Barista Basics (One session – 3 hours) $125

Designed for people who have never made coffee, this course will teach you how an espresso machine works, how to extract coffee, steam milk and common coffee recipes. This introductory course will give you the basic skills and knowledge needed to continue practicing on your own.

Classes are limited to six students, you will work together with another student so you can help each other and share what you’ve learnt. Mostly practical, with a little theory to help you understand what is happening.

  • Advanced Barista (Six sessions @ 3 hours each) – total 18 hours. $350

A more detailed course that will cover not only extracting coffee and preparing milk, but troubleshooting, problem solving, coffee recipes, latte art and presentation. You will have plenty of time to practice your skills with small class sizes and one-on-one assistance as you need it.

Classes are limited to six students, you will be paired with another student so you can help each other and share what you’ve learnt. Mostly practical, with a little theory to help you understand what is happening.

Courses run Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday (depending on holidays) for two weeks from 4pm – 7pm.

Bar Tending

  • Cocktails 101 (One session – 3 hours) $125

A very fun and practical course where you will learn to make 4 different drinks from different types of alcohol – and drink them! Held on a Friday night so that you can really relax. Bring a friend and have a great evening that starts with cocktails!

Course length: 3 hours (1pm - 4pm)

  • Managers Licence (Licence Controller Qualification, LCQ) $250 (includes $20 Service IQ certificate fee)

LCQ Licence Controller Qualification is a theory based course that consists of two units:

Unit 4646 – Demonstrate knowledge of the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012 and its implications for licensed premises

Unit 16705 – Demonstrate knowledge of host responsibility requirements as a duty manager of licensed premises

This course allows you to apply for your manager’s license, so that you can work as a manager where alcohol is sold. This will enable you to take on more responsibilities and better pay. You are responsible for applying for your Manager License through the local council once you have received your Service IQ LCQ Certificate.

Course length: Class time: 3 sessions @ 3 hours each. Self Directed Learning: Approximately 10-15 Hours. Total approximately 25 hours learning.

Course achievement: Service IQ LCQ Certificate, NZQA unit standards 4646 and 16705

  • Introduction to Hospitality (One session – 4 hours) $125

Ideal for those who are looking for work in a restaurant, café of bar. We will go over basic skills like carrying plates, the basics of coffee making, order taking, pouring wine and drinks and how to find work in the industry.

Course achievement: Crown Institute of Studies Introduction to Hospitality Certificate

Course length: 4 hours (1pm - 5pm)
